 Little Willie John

Diminutive in size but gigantic in stature, Little Willie John was a genuine architect of soul. And had he not died inside a Walla Walla prison at the age of 30, his name would likely be etched in the same soul Pantheon as his peers. Despite his abbreviated career, Willie cut a string of seminal sides for Cincinnati-based King Records from 1955 to 1961 that rank among the finest of the period.  Have a listen.

Big Bertha

Big Bertha resided on a Looff Carousel in Ramona Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1910 to 1945. She was made by Limonaire in France in the late 1800’s. First, she was a barrel organ, then she played from perforated cardboard books, then North Tonawanda endless rolls, then 82 key Artisan rolls, and now #165 Wurlitzer Military Band Rolls. She plays 369 pipes, a snare drum (with an action harking back to Leonard DaVinci!) a bass drum, two bells, tympani, double castanets, cymbals, a triangle and a set of 18 bells. She also has three life-like figures, many decorations and even a very savage-looking gargoyle.

 “The Spider and The Fly”
by Myra Taylor

Myra Taylor, a chanteuse who found fame during Kansas City’s 1930s jazz heyday, described herself as “a swing singer with rhythm. And I got my rhythm right here in Kansas City. Because Kansas City blues always had a beat.” In 1946, Taylor wrote and recorded her biggest hit, “The Spider And The Fly,” adapted from a cautionary tale about a cunning spider who uses flattery and charm to set a trap for a naive fly. “The Spider AndThe Fly” was heard on Monica‘s April 8th show on WFMU and is available on iTunes  and Amazon.

Center44′s SHOUT OUT “Save the Date!”

SAVE THE DATE!

        Song of the Week

“Jalousie”
by Xavier Cugat

Xavier Cugat, known as “Cugie,” was the first successful Latin bandleader in the United States and was largely responsible for popularizing the tango, the cha-cha, the mambo, and the rhumba. Often photographed holding a Chihuahua and a pipe, Cugat’s success went well beyond the bandstand to include numerous film appearances as well as careers as a cartoonist, Chihuahua breeder, restaurateur, and marketer of cigarette lighters and shirts. Cugat famously liked the ladies and is credited for helping launch Rita Hayworth’s career. He married five times, including marriages to two of his own vocalists, Abbe Lane and Charo, who he billed as a “folk singer.”  “Jalousie,” a tango, was heard on Monica‘s March 25th show on WFMU and is available on iTunes and Amazon .

“Must Be Catchin’” by Julie London

Billboard named Julie London the most popular female vocalist for 1955, ’56, and ’57.  Known for her smoky and sensual voice, and her widely regarded beauty and poise, she is most remembered for her iconic recording of “Cry Me a River.”  We were just introduced to her little known, sultry recording, “Must Be Catchin’,” on Monica’s March 11th Show on WFMU.  It appears on the just released “I’ll Cry Tomorrow and Rarities” available on Amazon.

         Song of the Week
  Song: “Mythical Kings And Iguanas”
Artist: Dory Previn
The late film lyricist and singer/songwriter Dory Previn  suffered an acutely painful childhood, life long mental health issues, and the notorious humiliation of being dumped by her husband André Previn in 1969 for the nubile charms of a young Mia Farrow. Her brutally honest lyrics reflected her personal struggles and yielded the lonely classics “Theme from Valley of the Dolls” (largely informed by her own pill reliance) and “Come Saturday Morning.”  Her seventies solo recordings include the haunting “Mythical Kings And Iguanas” as heard on Monica’s February 19th show on WFMU.  Available on Amazon.
