Heard in the Aisles – Song of the Week

 ”Happiness” by The Blue Nile

The Blue Nile was described by one pop connoisseur as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a raincoat.” The Glaswegian band’s melancholic and evocative melodies have only seen release on four critically acclaimed albums recorded over a twenty year period. However, the enduring beauty of their sparse catalog, coupled with rare live appearances, has secured both their mystique and their place in the pop pantheon. “Happiness” from the album “Peace At Last” (1996) is one of those heartbreakingly beautiful songs that’ll give you a lump in your throat it’s so damned sad.”Happiness“  was featured on Monica‘s July 24th show on WFMU and can be downloaded via iTunes and Amazon.

Watch What Happens“ by Peggy Lee

They just don’t get any sexier or sultrier than Peggy Lee‘s version of “Watch What Happens”. This classic Michel Legrand tune was originally penned for the 1964 film “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” starring fellow cool blonde goddess Catherine Deneuve, and was later given English lyrics by Norman Gimbel (lyricist for “Sway”,” “Summer Samba,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “Meditation” and “I Will Wait for You”). Lee’s 1966 recording appears on her album “Big Spender” and was featured on Monica‘s August 14th show on WFMU. Available for purchase via iTunes  and Amazon.

“Ticket to Ride” by The Swingle Singers

The original Swingle Singers formed in Paris in 1962 and were a surprise hit on the radio with their innovative scat and swing interpretations of Bach fugues. The group was comprised of eight crack session singers best known for their work with Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaf, and Michel Legrand as well as their previous alliances with pioneering vocal acts like Blossom Dearie’s Blue Stars of Paris and Mimi Perrin’s Les Double Six. Over the years, leader Ward Swingle guided a rotating cast of Swingles through explorations of music by Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, Dvorák, Lennon, Mancini, Bizet, Rodgers and Hart, Debussy, and more. Fifty years later, the Swingle Singers are still thriving. Their haunting 2002 a cappella version of “Ticket To Ride”  was featured on Monica’s August 7th show on WFMU  and can be purchased via Amazon.

I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)”

by Louis Prima

By the time Disney was casting the “The Jungle Book” in 1967, Louis Prima was one scattin’ cat who’d already lived many lives – as a dixieland band leader in the ’20s, a swing leader in the 30s (he wrote “Sing, Sing, Sing”), a big band leader in the ’40s, a sensationally popular Vegas headliner in the ’50s (with then-wife Keely Smith), and even as a rocker in the ’60s. Prima’s raspy voice and over-the-top personality made him a natural for the role of King Louie, the orangutan, singing the Sherman Brothers show-stopping tune. “I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)” was featured on Monica’s July 17th show on WFMU and can be purchased via iTunes and Amazon.

“Kooks”

by David Bowie

In 1971, a post-Space Oddity, pre-Ziggy Stardust David Bowie wrote “Kooks” as a sweet ode to his newborn son Zowie Bowie (legal name Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones) and it appears on his brilliant and critically-acclaimed Hunky Dory album.  As the story goes, Bowie was listening to a Neil Young record at home when he got the news of his son’s birth and so the song is thought to be a pastiche of Young’s early ’70s music. True or not, it’s a lovely and romantic tune that offers an unconventional primer on life lessons. Bonus factoid: the hand-tinted “Hunky Dory” album cover was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that Bowie took with him to the photo shoot. “Kooks” was featured on Monica‘s July 24th show  on WFMU and can be purchased via iTunes  and Amazon.

The Mid-Century Modern Waltz

by Frank Pahl

Avante-garde sound sculptor, composer and instrument inventor, Frank Pahl, is well-known for his retooling of neglected instruments and automatons (antique mechanical instruments).  His spooky and beautiful experimentations are on full display on his latest album, Music For Architecture, much of which was written for a documentary on modernist architect Eero Saarinen.  This time out, as described by writer Ernie Paik, Pahl has created, “a carefully tricked out piano with objects — like bottle caps, coins and screws — wedged between its strings.”  The results are stunning with the melancholy whistling and wistful melody of “The Mid-Century Modern Waltz” being a particular fave.  It was featured on Monica‘s July 10th show on WFMU.  The album can be purchased exclusively at Frank Pahl’s site

Invitation to the Hunt

Center44 boutique Jones Clark & Co. just brought us this exquisite 19th C. French painted canvas on panel in gilded carved wood frame, fresh to the market from a private collection. It is a whimsical 19th C. revival, in typical Pillemont style with fanciful imagery within an architectural panel.

Petty Booka‘s sweet and breezy bluegrass take on Mungo Jerry’s1970 hit “In The Summertime” is parfait for poolside parties in retro two-pieces and outdoor grilling in gingham and short shorts. Since themid-90s, the ukulele duo from Tokyo have made a career out of recording inspired covers of country, punk, classic-rock, disco, and exotica. They were way ahead of the curve on the uke revival and their hard-to-find catalog of Hawaiian-tinged hits is well worth tracking down. “InThe Summertime” was featured on Monica‘s June 26th show on WFMU.

“By The Beautiful Sea”

by

George Wright

Break out the Dramamine! There’s nothing like the Mighty Wurlitzer to lend a woozy, wobbly, and wonderful feel to just about any song. That includes legendary theater organist George Wright‘s vampy version of “By The Beautiful Sea”. Organ maestro Wright is reputed to have been the greatest technician of the pipe organ and easily the most-recorded pop organist of  all time. He was renowned among theater organists for his pyrotechnic virtuosity and perfectionism. Starting as organist at the Fox Theatre in San Francisco in the ’40s, he moved on to the Paramount in Times Square, and then to L.A. in 1950 as the studio organist for the venerable soap opera “General Hospital.” During the late ’50s and early ’60s, Wright played countless concerts and enjoyed a prolific recording career. A lifelong bachelor, Wright bought a house in the Hollywood Hills less for its location than its capacity to accommodate his massive organ. “By The Beautiful Sea” was featured on Monica’s June 19th show on WFMU and is available on “The Very Best Of George Wright” on iTunes and Amazon.
